Aldus in Japan

It was with great pleasure that we welcomed Prof. Koichi Yukishima from the University of Waseda and colleagues from the Japanese National Library for a curatorial tour of the Rylands and the Merchant’s of Print exhibition. IMG_3039 In addition to discussing how so many Aldines found their way to Manchester we also had time to pick out a few additional Aldines which didn’t make it into the exhibition, including the uncut Euripides in original vellum temporary wrapper and Spencer’s own alphabetical pocketbook listing his Aldine editions. In addition to hearing about the 200 Aldines in Japan, we were also fascinated to find out that the 1470 Sweynheym and Pannartz St Augustine De civitate dei, formerly owned by Spencer and sold back in the 1988 sale, is now part of the collection at Meisei University Library in Tokyo, Prof. Yukishima having added the reference in the ISTC.
