After lunch we walked in the delightful Spring sunshine to the Folger Library to meet Renate Mesmer and team to discuss issues around sampling collections and to demonstrate the completely non destructive nature of how we gather the minute collagen molecules. What a privilege to see behind the scenes, see the beautiful reading room and spend time in the wonderful and well designed conservation studio.
Following the demonstration the team at the Folger felt happy that the technique would not cause damage to their books and we even took eraser crumbs of one of their parchment deeds. We will forward the results to them on returning to the UK.
A big thank you to everyone in Washington for the kindness and hospitality they have shown. We have made good friends and hope to keep that connection going.
Next stop…Baltimore, train leaves soon.
